Castletown is an area of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear. It is north of the River Wear, and is near to Hylton Castle and Washington. Currently, the just beyond Castletown shops, there is a renovation project, which aims to demolish the old pit houses and build new, bigger and better houses. This has not gone down well with those living in those houses, or the owner of the houses, who are now causing big problems within Sunderland City Council.
At the opposite end of Castletown, there is Fulford Grange(which is more commonly known as the posh end and also Corned Beef City). Most houses are semi-detached and with the houses being relatively young, they are in great condition. Fulford Grange was the home of Michael Gray,( I'm not sure that he came from there, You'll find he originally came from the centre of castletown, living for a long time at Jennifer avenue with his parents) who played for Sunderland before continuing his career at a different football club. It is also home to Kieron Brady, another ex Sunderland footballer.
Currently, the records state that Castletown is the least ethnically diverse town in Sunderland, with 99.3% of the population being white.
During the search for the Yorkshire Ripper, the accent of 'Wearside Jack' was puported to be from the Castletown area of Sunderland.
