(medicine) A usually acute inflammation of the conjunctiva with smarting of the eyes, heaviness of the lids, photophobia, and excessive mucous or mucopurulent secretion, caused by a variety of contagious organisms, but sometimes becoming chronic as a sequela of the acute form or because of irritation from polluted atmosphere or allergic factors. Also known as pinkeye.
