Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) has steadily grown to become the largest private, not-for-profit health care provider in the state of California. Sponsored by six congregations of nuns, CHW operates a network of more than 40 acute-care facilities located in the Golden State and, to a lesser extent, in Arizona and Nevada. Those facilities house about 8,800 acute care beds, as well as 900 skilled nursing beds. CHW provides home health and hospice services through agencies in California and Nevada. It also operates emergency and specialty clinics, imaging centers, and medical labs, as well as managed care and wellness programs. Founded in 1986, CHW is the official health care provider of the San Francisco Giants.

Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) is a California not-for-profit public benefit corporation that operates hospitals in California, Arizona, and Nevada[1]. As such, it is exempt from federal and state income taxes. CHW is the eighth largest hospital system in the nation and the largest not-for-profit hospital provider in California[2].

Management

The corporation has three levels of management. The Corporate Members are the highest level of management, and appoint the members of the Board of Directors. The Corporate Members are religious women, one from each of the religious orders that co-sponsor CHW. The Board of Directors, together with the Corporate Members, appoint the Executive Management.

Co-sponsors

The co-sponsors of CHW are Catholic religious communities that have specific rights and responsibilities for CHW. Each community selects one woman to act as one of the seven Corporate Members. The seven co-sponsors are as follows:

History

CHW was founded in 1986 when the Sisters of Mercy Burlingame Regional Community and the Sisters of Mercy Auburn Regional Community merged their health care ministries into one organization[3].
