Catskill is a village in Greene County, New York, USA. The population was 4,392 at the 2000 census.
The Village of Catskill is in the northeast part of the Town of Catskill. Catskill is the county seat of Greene County.

Most of the village land was purchased from the natives in 1684. At the end of the American Revolution there were only ten houses in the community. The village was incorporated in 1806.[citation needed] Catskill is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter, the other villages having incorporated or re-incorporated under the provisions of Village Law.[1]
Martin van Buren was married in the village. John Adams, United States Congressman from New York died here.[2]
Longtime residence of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of painting. The historic site Cole House is preserved and has tours available. It is located near the approach for the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
George Decker, the General and Chief of Staff US Army during the Kennedy Administration, was born in Catskill.
Catskill is located at 42°13′07″N 73°52′00″W / 42.218704°N 73.86679°W (42.218704, -73.86679).[3]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2), of which, 2.2 square miles (5.8 km2) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.5 km2) of it (20.85%) is water.
The village is on the west side of the Hudson River, where Catskill Creek joins it.
As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 4,392 people, 1,765 households, and 1,101 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,962.0 people per square mile (757.0/km2). There were 2,048 housing units at an average density of 914.9/sq mi (353.0/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 81.40% White, 12.73% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.48% from other races, and 3.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.22% of the population.
There were 1,765 households out of which 29.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.9% were married couples living together, 18.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the village the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $28,075, and the median income for a family was $34,635. Males had a median income of $32,857 versus $21,578 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,169. About 16.6% of families and 19.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.1% of those under age 18 and 9.9% of those age 65 or over.
