Caught in the Act!

Album Review: Caught in the Act!

Review

From 1982-88, Jerry Bergonzi and his groups (Con Brio and Gonz) recorded frequently for first the Plug and then the Not Fat label; the former releases were reissued by the latter company. This live set (recorded in Australia) was the final album before the underrated tenor began making records for Red. Bergonzi, bassist Bruce Gertz and drummer Bob Gullotti were joined by Gonz's newest member, the talented young pianist Salvatore Bonafede. They perform Bergonzi's sly "Arbonius Unt" (dedicated to you-know-who), John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice," and a lengthy version of "Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise." Despite the length of the renditions, the soloing (particularly by the fiery Bergonzi) holds one's interest throughout. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
