Biography

Cauterize first rocked their way out of Oshawa, Ontario, in 2003. Led by vocalist/guitarist Jesse Smith, the group of lifelong pals also included guitarist Josh Slater, bassist Jason Bone, and drummer Matt Worobec. They certainly weren't the only bunch of freshly minted yung'uns plying punk-pop goodness on the mall-going masses (see their countrymen in Sum 41). But Smith and his cronies deserved credit for being honest about their primary influences (Green Day), and acknowledging that their rookie status made energetic, committed live performances that much more important. To that end, they made waves with an opening slot on Evanescence's 2003 tour, supporting their debut LP, So Far From Real, which was issued by Wind-Up that August. Cauterize continued touring through year's end, appearing with Three Days Grace and Hoobastank. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

History

In 2003 the band went back into the studio with Murray Daigle to record their 3rd full length CD So Far From Real. The CD was releases to Critically acclaimed success and the band toured with the likes of Evanescence, Three Days Grace and Hoobastank.

Their first Single "Something Beautiful" was released to Radio and a video was in medium rotation on Much Loud. The 2nd and 3rd singles "Choke" and "Killing Me" were featured in Nintendo's 1080 Avalanche video game and commercials along with a hidden live video in the game and things were looking bright for the band.

Touring came to an end at Christmas and the band started to write for their second album. Shortly after, Cauterize left Wind-up citing creative difference and in 2005 released their second album "Paper Wings" independently. They also added a 3rd guitarist to the line-up, Chuck Coles (previously of Murder Culture). By this time, Goldfinger drummer Darrin Pfeiffer had taken the band under his 'management wing' and started shopping them around to other labels.

In 2006 Darrin started his own label (High 4 Records) to focus on Canadian Talent and signed Cauterize as one of his 1st acts. The band went back into the studio with Greig Nori (Treble Charger, Sum 41) to re-record some of the tracks from Paper Wings and a few new tracks and Paper Wings was re-released under the High 4 moniker as Disguises on June 12, 2007.

Disguises was released in stores and online in 2007 and the first 2000 orders through the online retailer Maple Music would get a free copy of an acoustic EP featuring 5 songs from disguises titled "Unmasked". Poor album sales were evident early, as the Unmasked EP did not sell out through through MapleMusic. No music videos were made for either single, "Closer" or "Minor Key Symphony" and the album didn't get much radio play.

During a concert on September 12, 2007 in Ottawa, Cauterize announced they were breaking up; ending their more than ten years together as a band. The band had been scheduled to play on MTV Live in Canada on September 5 and cancelled, which was later found to be due to the decision to break up the band. A formal announcement was posted on the band's message board and website on September 27, 2007. They played their final show together October 19, 2007 in their hometown of Oshawa. At the show they played songs from every album including the albums as TOE with their final song onstage being "Curtain Call" from the TOE album "The Moment I Cauterize"... a fitting way to end a good run.

Chuck Coles is currently playing with Brown Brigade and The Organ Thieves. Matt Worobec has recently joined The Organ Thieves as their drummer. Jesse Smith and Jason Bone now own their own recording studio in Oshawa called The Boom Cave.
