(CD DataBase) The first online music database used to identify music CDs in order to obtain the missing album and track information. Developed by Ti Kan and Steve Scherf, it was originally a community driven service, but became a commercial product when CDDB, Inc. was founded in 1995. The company was renamed Gracenote three years later and then acquired by Sony in 2008. The first version of CDDB (CDDB1) was turned over to the freedb community and is compatible with freedb client software. Subsequent versions of CDDB are not compatible, however, and underwent a name change to Gracenote Media Database (see freedb). See Gracenote MusicID, music CD identification and music search.
