Subdivision of a county, in one of 20 states, with physical borders such as a river or highway. Used by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for the presentation of statistical data, the CCD covers a population of approximately 5500 people. It is similar to a minor civil division, which is a subdivision of a more densely populated county. Census data is used in list enhancement to add demographic information to the records on a file, based on address criteria (such as CCD of residence). See also census-designated place.
