is pronounced sen-teen-ǝ-ri. It is the usual term in British English (as both noun and adjective) to denote a hundredth anniversary. In American English and elsewhere, centennial is more usual. Edgar Allan Poe

On the centenary of the death of writer Edgar Allan Poe — October 7, 1949 — a partially empty bottle of cognac and three red roses were left at the poet's grave. Since then, the Poe Toaster has left his mark every year on Poe's birthday; today will mark his 60th visit. Edgar Allan Poe, born 200 years ago today, wrote what is often called the first modern detective story, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." His poems and short stories were often macabre and ghoulish and highly romantic. Two of Poe's best-known poems are "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee."
