Central Victorian High Country

Wine Lover's Companion: Central Victorian High Country

Formerly called Strathbogie Ranges, this Australian wine region is located in the Central Victoria Zone of victoria. It's situated about 60 miles north and slightly east of Melbourne around the towns of Seymour and Mansfield. This is cool, high country, and most vineyards are planted at about the 1,000- to 1,600-foot level, meaning that the focus is on cool-weather varieties. chardonnay is used for both still wines and sparkling wines (the latter also utilize much of the pinot noir crop). Domaine Chandon and giant Southcorp use grapes from this area for their sparkling wines. Varieties like riesling, gewürztraminer, and sauvignon blanc produce crisp, fruity wines.
