Centros Comerciales Carrefour (aka Carrefour España) leads the Spanish grocery market. The Spanish subsidiary of the French retail group Carrefour, Carrefour España owns or franchises about 3,000 stores including hypermarkets and supermarkets (under the Carrefour, Continente, and Pryca banners), as well as discount stores under the Dia and MaxiDia banners. The company has discontinued its operations under the Champion banner and sold its Puntocash chain of cash and carry stores. Former Champion shops are being converted to Dia and Carrefour Express stores. Parent Carrefour, which owns about 96% of the shares of Carrefour España, plans to buy out the minority investors.
