History
The station was launched by its original owners, Border Television at 8am on 14 April 1993 when Managing Director and Breakfast show host John Myers played "The Best" by Tina Turner as its first song.
Originally CFM only broadcast from their Caldbeck mast to Carlisle on 96.4 and Penrith, from on the top of Beacon Hill,on 102.5 In September 1995 they also started transmitting to West Cumbria from their transmitter at Broughton Moor, Frequencies for the West Coast are 102.2 (Workington) and 103.4 (Whitehaven).
In 2005 media giant Emap bought CFM and branded it as one of its Big City Network of stations. In 2008 Emap was bought by Bauer, who have retained ownership of the station.
Present
CFM is currently the market leader for commercial radio in Cumbria and Southern Scotland (according to Radio Authority joint audience research data in January 2008).
From its launch in 1993, the station has broadcast from premises adjacent to Border Television's studios in Durranhill, Carlisle. With the merger of ITV Border and ITV Tyne Tees the Border building is now empty and CFM are also expected to move to a new studio complex within the next 12 months.
CFM employs a split transmission system, allowing for separate news bulletins to air for the North East and North West of Cumbria, as well as affording advertisers the opportunity to target either, or both, of the station's transmission areas.
Previously, CFM has won numerous industry awards including the Radio Academy's North West Station of the Year 2005 and Emap Station of the Year 2006.
It is also nominated in a category for this years Sony Awards.
