A chance seedling is a plant that is the product of unintentional breeding. A seedling that would come up in your flowerbed or garden is a chance seedling. Assigning the parental lines with chance seedlings is often difficult but not impossible. Two strategies that can be implemented include observing your surrounding and trying to locate the parental lines of the progeny or an individual can use multiple genetic techniques. Plants that come from the intentional union of gametes from a maternal and paternal source are not chance seedlings.
The Kindred Spirit Hybrid Oak is a chance seedling that was selected and assigned cultivar status.
