Chari-Nile is a now obsolete name for a subset of the Nilo-Saharan language family. The name was introduced by Joseph Greenberg in his 1955 Studies in African linguistic classification. It derives from the fact that the languages in this subfamily were spoken in the watersheds of the Chari (main tributary of Lake Chad) and Nile rivers, or in the area between them.
