Charles-Auguste La Fare

French Literature Companion: Charles-Auguste La Fare

La Fare, Charles-Auguste, marquis de (1644-1712). French poet. After a military career he became a close friend of Chaulieu and an habitué of the Temple. His (perhaps underrated) poetry includes playful amorous verse as well as reflective pieces on such themes as modern corruption and rural retreat. He also translated Latin poetry and left valuable Mémoires sur les principaux événements du règne de Louis XIV (published posthumously).
