Charles Ferdinand duc de Berry

Berry, Charles, duc de (1778-1820). Second son of Charles X. His assassination seemed like the end of the Bourbon dynasty, but he was survived by a posthumous son, the comte de Chambord, who was the Legitimist claimant to the throne (‘Henri V’) from 1836 until his death in 1883. In 1832 the duchesse de Berry, with support from Chateaubriand among others, mounted an unsuccessful plot to restore the Bourbons.

Berry, Charles Ferdinand, duc de (shärl fĕrdēnäN', dük də bĕrē'), 1778-1820, younger son of Charles, comte d'Artois (later Charles X of France). He served in the prince de Condé's army against the French Revolution. His assassination during the reign of King Louis XVIII-an attempt to extinguish the Bourbon line-gave the ultraroyalists the opportunity to turn Louis XVIII against the liberals. Berry's posthumous son was Henri, comte de Chambord.
