| Works: Works by Charles Klein |
| 1904 | The Music Master. Klein has one of his largest popular successes in this drama about a Viennese conductor's search for his daughter, who is taken from him by his wife when she deserts him for another. Klein was a former actor who wrote librettos, comedies, and melodramas, including El Capitan (1896), Heartsease (1897), and The Auctioneer (1901). |
| 1905 | The Lion and the Mouse. The decade's biggest hit and longest-running play, with 686 performances, is this not-so-veiled dramatization based on Ida Tarbell's muckraking campaign against John D. Rockefeller. Klein would continue to feature social commentary in his dramas, as in his attack on police brutality in his play The Third Degree (1909). |
