Weed, Charles Leander (1824-1903), American portraitist and landscape photographer who took views in the USA, Asia, and Hawaii. But he is famous as the first person to photograph the Yosemite Valley in California, where he made large-format wet-plate photographs, and stereographs, in June 1859. He moved there in 1863, and his mammoth-plate views, many of them reproduced as engravings, contributed to the developing tourism industry.
