La Condamine, Charles-Marie de (1701-74). French mathematician and scientist. A member of the Académie des Sciences, he was sent by that body in 1736 to South America, to make astronomical observations [see Maupertuis]. Having stayed there for ten years, he wrote fine accounts of his travels, notably the Journal d'un voyage fait par ordre du roi à l'équateur (1751).
