Charles of Austria (15 September 1607-30 July 1632) was infante of Spain. As the second son of Philip III of Spain and Margaret of Austria, he was heir to the Spanish throne during the reign of his brother Philip IV until the birth of Philip IV's son Balthasar Charles in 1629. Never a friend of his brother's favourite and prime minister the Count-Duke of Olivares, Charles never had any great interest in politics but even so he was used by various nobles in attempts to overthrow Olivares. He was on the point of ascending the throne during Philip's severest illness, but Philip finally recovered and on Balthasar Charles's birth what political importance Charles had dissipated completely. Charles finally died in 1632 aged only 25 (on which event Quevedo dedicated a sonnet entitled The Burial of the Most Serene Infante Don Carlos), becoming one of the era's most enigmatic characters due to his strange and possibly unhealthy personality.
