Charles "Charley" Teetai Ane, Jr. (January 25, 1931 – May 9, 2007) was an American football offensive lineman.

High school

Ane excelled in baseball, basketball and track as well as football at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ane was a key two-way lineman on the powerful Buffanblu teams of the late 1940s.

College career

Ane played college football at the University of Southern California. He transferred from Compton Community College. At USC, he was a two-way tackle and quarterback in the single wing and played baseball before leaving a year early for the NFL. He was an All-Coast selection at USC in the early 1950s.

Professional career

Ane played his entire National Football League career for the Detroit Lions. In 1953, Detroit made him the franchise’s fourth-round selection (49th overall) in the NFL Draft. He was elected to the Pro Bowl in 1956 and 1958. He helped the Lions to three division titles, two NFL championships and was voted team captain from 1958-59. He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1960 NFL Expansion Draft, but did not make the active roster.

Personal

Ane's son, Charles "Kale" Teetai Ane III played at Michigan State and for seven seasons in the NFL before becoming head football coach at The Punahou School.

Coaching

Ane served as head football coach at Damien Memorial High School on Oahu and St. Anthony Jr./Sr. High School on Maui and was an assistant coach at Punahou, Radford High School and Kaimuki High School. Ane was later an assistant coach under his son at Punahou for four seasons from 1999-2003.

Death

Ane died on May 9th, 2007 in Honolulu.[1] He was 76 years old and died after prolonged health issues.

Trivia

  • Ane and son Kale, who also played at Punahou, were among the first father-son combos to play in the Hula Bowl.
  • Ane was selected to five athletics halls of fame — Punahou, USC, Detroit Lions, Samoan and Hawai'i Sports.
  • One of the players that Ane coached at Punahou was current UCLA and former Tennessee Titans Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow.
