Biography

Pop songwriter Charlie Singleton (or Charles) is best known for co-writing "Strangers in the Night," the number-one hit that revitalized Frank Sinatra's career in 1966. Not to be confused with another songwriter of the same name (who often partnered with Rose Marie McCoy), this Charlie Singleton frequently worked in tandem with Eddie Snyder, who assisted in turning a piece by German bandleader/composer Bert Kaempfert into "Strangers in the Night." Singleton's other major success was the pop standard "Spanish Eyes," another team effort with Kaempfert and Snyder that remains most associated with Al Martino; it was originally recorded by Kaempfert as an instrumental called "Moon Over Naples." Wayne Newton also recorded Singleton, Snyder, Kaempfert, and Herb Rehbein's collaboration "Remember When (We Made These Memories)." Even when working with other partners besides Snyder, Singleton had his greatest luck with Kaempfert melodies, as with Jack Jones' 1967 easy-listening smash "Lady." ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
