Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna

Tonna, Charlotte Elizabeth (née Elizabeth Charlotte Browne) (1790-1846), poet and novelist. The daughter of a Norwich clergyman, she wrote religious tracts for a Dublin evangelical society as ‘Charlotte Elizabeth’ and more than thirty novels, mainly addressing social problems, as in Helen Fleetwood, a Tale of the Factories (1841). The Rockite (1838) and Derry, a Tale of Revolution (1839) attack Catholicism. Her best-known poems are anonymously printed ballads such as ‘The Maiden City’.
