Charlotte Stieglitz

German Literature Companion: Charlotte Stieglitz

Stieglitz, Charlotte (Hamburg, 1806-34, Berlin), née Willhöft, married H. Stieglitz in 1828. Her suicide by stabbing caused a public sensation. Her declared motive was to give her husband a tragic experience which would release his creative powers. Theodor Mundt wrote a sympathetic memoir entitled Charlotte Stieglitz. Ein Denkmal (1836).
