American organization founded in 1874 in Chautauqua, New York, as a training camp for Sunday school teachers; after its first assembly (1876) it rapidly expanded to become a summer programme of adult education at conservatory level, with lectures and seminars, in which performance was also important. It was widely imitated and many other such educational summer institutions were established.
