checkout counter

Marketing Dictionary: checkout counter

Place where purchases are checked and paid for in a supermarket or other self-service store. For the advertiser, this is a good place for displays of items that lend themselves to impulse buying (called point-of-purchase displays), since the customer has money out and is already in a frame of mind to make a purchase. See also point-of-purchase advertising.
