Cherkessk (Russian: Черке́сск) is a city in Southern Russia, North Caucasian Region. It is the capital of Karachay-Cherkess Republic, as well as the political, economic and cultural center of Russians and ethnic minorities residing in Karachay-Cherkessia. It is located at 44°13′N 42°03′E / 44.217°N 42.05°E / 44.217; 42.05. Population: 116,244 (2002 Census); 113,060 (1989 Census).

History

The city was founded in 1804 as Cossack stanitsa Batalpashinskaya, after Batal-Pasha, a Turkish general of Circassian origin, who was defeated in the battle on this territory in 1790. In 1931 it was given a town status and was renamed Batalpashinsk; then Sulimov in 1934, then Yezhovo-Cherkessk in 1937, and finally Cherkessk in 1939.

The city is inhabited by native Cherkess (Circassians), Karachays, Russians, Abaza, Nogays and minorities of Greeks and Armenians.
