Biography

A talented performer of stage and screen whose quick, on-the-fly wit made her the perfect candidate for a role on Seinfeld co-creator Larry David's popular HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm, actress Cheryl Hines found her comic footing as a member of the famed Groundlings troupe before making the leap to the screen in the mid- to late '90s. Though the Florida native would study theater, radio, and television at Florida State University, a move to Los Angeles found her discovering a natural talent for improvisational theater. In the following years, Hines would refine her comic skills while gaining exposure on such popular television series as Suddenly Susan, The Wayans Bros., and Friends, though it was her Emmy-nominated performance as hapless comic Larry David's wife on Curb Your Enthusiasm that truly made her a recognizable face on the small screen. Before making the leap to features with a supporting role in the 2004 comedy Along Came Polly, Hines continued to amuse on television with bit parts in Everybody Loves Raymond, Ask Rita, and Reno 911! The laughs continued when Hines landed the role of a mother tiger on the animated television series Father of the Pride. In addition to her screen work, Hines has also amused audiences by playing a supremely untalented solo performer in the warmly received performance piece One Woman Show. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Early life

Hines was born in Miami Beach, Florida, the daughter of Rosemary Graham Harbolt and James Hines, whom she has described as "sort of a redneck."[1] Part of the family came from Frostproof, Florida;[2] Hines grew up in Tallahassee, Florida,[2] where she was a member of the Young Actors Theatre throughout high school. Hines also attended Lively Technical Center in Tallahassee.

Hines attended both West Virginia University and Florida State University, before graduating from the University of Central Florida.

Career

Before making her break in Hollywood, Hines worked as a waitress, television reporter, telephone operator as well as a personal assistant to Rob Reiner when she moved to LA. Though Reiner did not play a critical role in her career, he would come watch her shows when she began acting. Hines moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue an acting career and began by doing improvisational comedy at The Groundlings Theater. Among the people she studied with was Lisa Kudrow.[2] She also learned to write comedy sketches, which served her well when working on Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO as Larry David's wife, Cheryl. The show is written as retroscripting in which the plot outlines are generally and loosely drawn and the individual actors improvise to create the dialogue.

“When the show first came out, people from Tallahassee thought, ‘Well, maybe Cheryl got married,’” she recalls of the show’s initial reception. “Sometimes, I do feel like I live two lives.”[3]

In July 2006, Hines received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In films, she was one of the stars of RV opposite Robin Williams, Waitress with Keri Russell, and the 2008 mockumentary comedy The Grand, a spoof of the World Series of Poker.

On November 24, 2008, TV Guide reported that Hines will co-star in the new ABC sitcom In The Motherhood, where she will be acting out real-life stories submitted by mothers.[4] She has confirmed that she will also continue her role on Curb Your Enthusiasm.[5]

Personal life

She has been married to Paul Young, chairman of L.A.’s Groundlings Theater,[2] since December 30, 2002, and their daughter, Catherine Rose, was born on March 8, 2004. Hines participated in the 2006 Pro-Am Poker Equalizer. Hines is sister to Rebecca Hines, a professor at the University of Central Florida.
