It is a pity that the major accolades in jazz often fall to the sharpest dresser, fastest picker, or highest screecher. Thus, fans of jazz piano may not have come across this fine artist yet, since he chooses to play from a historic regional perspective and does it without either showing off or trying to smile like Harry Connick, Jr. There is a trick to pulling off fresh solo piano versions of tunes such as "Honeysuckle Rose" or "Sweet Georgia Brown"; it has to do with relaxation and -- within that -- the right feel. Don't fear that he sticks to only the tried and true in this recital, as the originals he comes up with are very nice, Ellingtonia in both feel and title: "Pooch Piddle," for instance. In choice and approach, he shows good taste on "These Foolish Things." This is good, solid jazz without a far-out note in it, and it is recorded extremely well. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
