Plot

In this fact-based, made-for-TV drama, Gabrielle Roy (Genevieve Desilets) is a young woman studying to be a teacher whose enthusiasm outstrips her experience, both in life and as an educator. During the depth of the Great Depression, Gabrielle finds work as a schoolteacher in a small town on the prairie, but while she arrives determined to make a difference, she soon discovers not everyone in the community trusts her new and innovative teaching methods. Gabrielle finds she has a much greater problem, however, when one of her students -- a 15-year-old boy -- falls in love with her, which she soon realizes is something more than an ordinary schoolboy crush. Children of My Heart, based on Gabrielle Roy's memoirs, also features Yani Gellman, Isabella Fink, and Michael Moriarty. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Children of My Heart is a novel by Gabrielle Roy, published in 1977. The novel, Roy's last published work of fiction, was originally published in French as Ces enfants de ma vie.

The novel's protagonist is "Mamzelle", a young teacher in a 1930s Prairie town. Based on Roy's own experiences as a teacher, the novel focuses on Mamzelle's relationship with her students.

Awards and nominations

The novel won the 1977 Governor General's Award for French language fiction. Its English translation was selected for inclusion in the 2007 edition of Canada Reads, where it was championed by journalist Denise Bombardier. It was, however, the first book voted out of the competition by the panelists.
