There's a lot of steel on China Steel's plate. Taiwan's only integrated steelmaker and slab producer, China Steel Corporation (CSC) makes products used in items ranging from hand tools to bridges. The company's steel plates go into ships; wire rods become nuts, bolts, and hand tools; steel sheets end up as auto parts; cold-rolled coils are used in steel furniture and home appliances. CSC also makes hot-rolled bands, coils, sheets, and hot-rolled pickled and oiled coil. China Steel, which conducts the majority of its business in Taiwan, began as a private enterprise, later became a state-owned corporation, and then was re-privatized (though the government retains just less than a quarter stake in the company).

History

China Steel was planned and organized in 1960s and the corporation was officially established in December 3, 1971. In November 1, 1974, CSC began the first stage of construction. Its head office was located in Taipei between 1971 and 1975, but translocated to Kaohsiung since September 15, 1975.

The first blast furnace was launched in June 27, 1977. A few months later, the first stage of the building plan of the steel mill was accomplished. The second and the third stage were subsequently accomplished in 1982 and 1988, respectively. Presently, the company has a total of four blast furnaces.

CSC was started as a non-governmental company. It once transformed into a state-owned company in July 1, 1977 and subsequently re-privatized in April 12, 1995. Although CSC is a de jure non-governmental company at present, the Government of Taiwan still owns a large portion of its stocks, thus the chairman of company is appointed by the government.
