Chippewa Falls, city (1990 pop. 12,727), seat of Chippewa co., W central Wis., on the Chippewa River; settled 1837, inc. as a city 1869. Originally a lumbering town, Chippewa Falls once had the world's largest sawmill. It remains a trade and processing center in a cattle-raising region. Foam and paper products, wood and coal furnaces, supercomputers, and shoes are manufactured. Nearby Wissota State Park includes Lake Wissota (created 1917), Wisconsin's largest reservoir.
