chorēgia, at Athens, a form of liturgy or public service in which individual wealthy citizens were expected to bear the expense of providing a chorus for one or other of the various lyric and dramatic contests (at the Panathenaea, Thargelia, Dionysia, and Lenaea), and hence were known as choregoi. The expense was considerable.
