Biography

Chris Brokaw contributed his expertise on guitar and drums to the bands Come and Codeine before striking out on his own as a solo act. He also had contributed to recordings by Steve Wynn, Pullman, the Willard Grant Conspiracy, and the New Year, among others. His first time out as a solo artist saw him split an EP with the Spanish group Viva Las Vegas. The recording was put out jointly by Acuarela Records and Kimchee Records.

A native of New York, Brokaw settled in Boston during the mid-'80s. His first rock gig came four years later when he signed on with the slowcore band Codeine as its drummer. He remained with the group through two years, and contributed to the recording of an EP and a full-length album. He moved on to Come, devoting himself to the blues-rock outfit that he'd already been with for about a year as a guitarist. A handful of albums and a variety of singles followed, with Thalia Zedek at the band's forefront, as the group recorded for the label Meteor. When the band fell apart and Zedek started out as a solo artist, Brokaw and a few other Come bandmates contributed to her recordings. The favor was returned when Brokaw was recording the EP that he split with Viva Las Vegas, and Zedek contributed her talents to the song "Bricks," while Bedhead's Matt Kadane also contributed on the organ. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide

Chris Brokaw is an American musician, mostly known for his work with the bands Come and Codeine.

While studying at Oberlin College, Brokaw met many people who became figures on the American indie rock scene of the 1990s, among them Stephen Immerwahr, who formed Codeine with Brokaw, as well as Sooyoung Park of Bitch Magnet and Seam, Liz Phair and John McEntire of Tortoise.

Soon after graduating from Oberlin, Brokaw played drums for G.G. Allin. He also played drums on the two first Codeine albums, and helped kick-start Liz Phair's career. In 1990 he returned to the guitar, one of his two main instruments, and teamed up with Thalia Zedek, a well-known figure on New York's post-No Wave scene. The two formed Come, a band that despite never gaining much mainstream popularity is still widely seen as one of the most important bands of the American indie rock scene of the 1990s, in terms of originality and artistic courage.[citation needed]

Brokaw and Zedek took a break from Come at the end of the decade, and the band never regrouped, though the pair has since performed together on many occasions.

After Come, Brokaw has released several albums in his own name, from the instrumental Post-Rock of Red Cities, through the composition and performance of the musical score for "i was born, but...", to the more straight-forward song structure of Incredible Love. Both Brokaw and Zedek were invited to participate in a limited edition series of albums by Normal Records, a German label. As a noteworthy detail, Brokaw recorded his contribution, Wandering As Water, in one day, playing all instruments on the record.

Additionally, Brokaw has played in the bands Pullman, Consonant, and The New Year and collaborated with many artists, such as Steve Wynn and Evan Dando. Chris participated as drummer 10 in the Boredoms 77 Boadrum performance which occurred on July 7th, 2007 at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, New York.
