Music Encyclopedia: John (Christopher) Williams

(b Melbourne, 24 April 1942). Australian guitarist. His family settled in England in 1952 and he played publicly in 1955; after study with Segovia he made a formal début in 1958. He has taught the guitar at the RCM (1960-73) and at the RNCM (1973). Many composers have written for him. He has toured widely and is interested in combining the guitar with electronics and drawing on popular and non-Western idioms; he founded a rock group, Sky.

Biography

Contemporary soul singer Christopher Williams released his CW debut in 1987. Four years later, he acted in New Jack City; his single from the soundtrack, "Dreamin'," turned gold and reached number one. His 1993 album (Changes) featured the hits "Every Little Thing" and "Come Go with Me." 1995's Not a Perfect Man brought a new direction for Williams; his first album as sole executive producer uses elements of reggae, R&B, hip-hop and country. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
