Chumming (American English) is the practice of luring animals, usually fish or shark, by throwing "chum" into the water. Chum often consists of fish parts and blood, which attracts fish, and particularly sharks due to their keen sense of smell.
Chumming is illegal in many parts of the world[citation needed], including at least one American state[1], in Alabama, as it causes sharks to associate the presence of humans with feeding.
Also known as Rubby Dubby[2](West Country & Yorkshire, UK), Shirvey or chirvey (Guernsey, Channel Islands), Berley/Berlying[3] (Australasia), Bait Balls.
