Cinderella Man

  • Release Year: 1918

Plot

This picture, based on the play by Edward Childs Carpenter, was Goldwyn's 1917 Christmas release. Marjorie Caner (Mae Marsh) is the daughter of a rich but crabby broker (George Fawcett). She is engaged to a fortune hunter (Boyce Coombe), but when she hears about Anthony Quintard (Tom Moore), a poor poet from a good family who lives in a nearby attic, she takes an interest in him. With the help of her father's friend, Romney Evans (Alec B. Francis), they sneak into Anthony's humble surroundings and dress it up for Christmas. After that, Anthony and Marjorie strike up a friendship, with Marjorie pretending to be her own hired companion. Eventually they fall in love, and Mr. Caner's heart melts enough for him to care that his daughter marry the man of her choice. He tells the fortune hunter that he has gone broke so that he will go away. Then, when Anthony finds out Marjorie's real identity and is intimidated by her wealth, he tells Mr. Caner that after they are married, she won't get any of his money. This does the trick, and the couple are happily united. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
