City Avenue (also City Line Avenue) is the local name of a section of U.S. Route 1 (US 1), and is a major commercial and residential arterial street that divides the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the northwestern suburban communities of Bala Cynwyd, Merion Station, and Penn Wynne which are all located in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

The west end of the City Avenue name is at the bridge where the road crosses Cobbs Creek, the western border of Philadelphia, rather than at an intersection. The road is named Township Line Road west of there. City Avenue runs northeast to the Schuylkill River. Just before the river, City Avenue has an interchange with Interstate 76, and loses the US 1 designation to that highway.

Saint Joseph's University is located on and bisected by City Avenue.

City Line

City Avenue is also known as City Line, because the road lies on the border between Philadelphia City-County and Montgomery Counties. Furthermore, the street was used as part of the dividing line when the 215 area code was split, with Philadelphia retaining 215 and the western suburbs becoming 610.

Official name

Some maps have City Avenue, others, including the USGS topographic maps, have City Line Avenue. Google Maps lists both. The I-76 exit signs list City Avenue.
