Biography

The recipient of three Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, Claire Cloninger is one of the most successful modern gospel songwriters. A prolific writer, Cloninger has written 19 seasonal musicals for church choir. Her songs, which have been covered by such artists as B.J. Thomas, Amy Grant, and Pat and Debby Boone, are perennial listings in the Gospel Top Ten. Cloninger was commissioned by the National Statue of Liberty Centennial Committee to write a new second verse for the "Star Spangled Banner," which was recorded by Sandi Patti. Her song, "Friend of a Wounded Heart," recorded by Wayne Watson, received a Dove Award as Song of the Year in 1989.
