(b Montreal, 27 May 1891; d there, 21 Dec 1965). Canadian composer. He studied in Canada and in France (1920-28), where he discovered in Fauré, Debussy and Renaissance music the modal means for handling French-Canadian folk music. Back in Canada he taught at the McGill University Conservatorium (1930-42) and at the Montreal Conservatory from its foundation in 1942. His works include orchestral, chamber and choral pieces. Noteworthy are Images du Canada français (1943), sound pictures of outstanding mastery for chorus and orchestra, and Altitude (1959), a vast fresco for the same forces.
