Lancelot, Claude (1616-95). Teacher in Port-Royal's ‘Petites Écoles’ counting Racine among his pupils. His various grammars—Greek, Latin, Spanish, Italian—explained the rules in French rhymes which children could memorize. He taught Greek and Latin through French rather than Latin. With Antoine Arnauld he produced the influential Grammaire générale et raisonnée (1660) [see Grammars, 2]. His Mémoires appeared posthumously (1738).
