Claudine von Villa Bella, ein Schauspiel mit Gesang, a Singspiel written by Goethe in 1774-5 and published in 1776. The sub-title was changed to ‘Ein Singspiel’ in 1788. It is a good-humoured romantic comedy in which the complication of the love-match between Claudine and Pedro hinges on the attraction of the vagabond Crugantino to Claudine. Crugantino turns out to be Pedro's lost brother, who had turned his back on society.
