Clausula

(Lat.)

Medieval term, denoting the concluding of a passage (or the passage itself thus concluded), used in medieval music theory with a similar range of meanings. It is now used almost exclusively for the settings in discant style of a fragment of plainchant, designed as more modern substitutes for passages of organum, in Notre Dame polyphony. The motet developed from the clausula c 1200 through the addition of new texts to the upper voices.
