Cleidoic eggs

Cleidoic eggs are simply ones that are contained, hence protected, inside of a somewhat impervious shellsuch as the eggs of birds. The presence of a shell around an egg freed the amphibian ancestors of reptiles from the need to return to the water to lay eggs and provided greater protection from dying.
