Biography

An actor, singer and songwriter, Clifton Davis has appeared in several television shows and films. He has recorded numerous inspirational and gospel hits and has made a name for himself as a songwriter. More recently he has taken to public speaking mainly making motivational speeches at colleges and universities.

Clifton Davis was born in Chicago and is the son of an evangelist. By the age of 15, Clifton Davis was set on an acting career. In 1963 he graduated from Pine Forge Institute and from there concentrated on his singing and acting career. During the 1960s his career focused mainly on the stage. He made his Broadway debut in 1968 with How to Steal an Election with music and lyrics by Oscar Brand. He also starred in Two Gentlemen of Verona, for which Clifton Davis was nominated for a Tony Award. For his role in the musical Do It Again, Clifton Davis received the Theatre World Award.

Despite his success on Broadway the star became involved in drugs and alcohol at an early age. Clifton Davis recounts these experiences during his seminars and lectures across the country. He blames his addictions on peer pressure. During this time he claims he "lost valuable time and money and gained sickness, depression and desperation." Lately he has been reaching out to college and university students, telling them his story, hoping they learn from his experiences.

Clifton Davis, aside from his stage reputation, has also developed film and television credits. In 1971 he made several appearances on Love American Style. This was followed by him becoming the host of his own variety show, The Melba Moore-Clifton Davis Show, on ABC. His film career began in 1974 with the film Lost In the Stars. From 1974-75 he portrayed Clifton Curtis on the comedy show That's My Mama.

The '80s was a very important decade for Clifton Davis. His popularity and fame grew enormously in 1986 when he starred as Reverend Reuben Gregory, opposite Sherman Hemsley, on the comedy sitcom, Amen. During the four years the show was on the air Clifton Davis was also playing the role of a minister in real life. He was the associate pastor at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in California. He also starred in several movies in the '80s including The Night the City Screamed, Don't Look Back: The Story of Leroy "Satchel" Paige and Dream Date.

Aside from his singing and acting talents, Clifton Davis is also credited with being a songwriter. He wrote the Jackson 5 hit "Never Can Say Goodbye."

Career

Davis was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Thelma vanPutten Langhorn, a nurse, and Toussaint L'Ouverture Davis, a Baptist minister.[1] He was raised in Mastic, New York.

Clifton starred as barber Clifton Curtis in the mid 1970's television show "That's My Mama" with Theresa Merritt, Theodore Wilson and Ted Lange (who subsequently became a mainstay of the Love Boat).

Davis made a guest appearance on the third episode of the first season of The Bobby Vinton Show in September 1975, singing "I've Got The Music In Me" and "Never Can Say Goodbye". He successfully sang the Polish lyrics with Vinton to the show's "My Melody of Love" theme song.

Before finding fame in acting, Davis worked as a songwriter, most famously penning The Jackson 5's #2 hit "Never Can Say Goodbye".

A triple heart bypass survivor, he participated in the "superstars" celebrity tv sports competitions of the seventies. He also appeared in the film Scott Joplin in 1977.

Davis released one acclaimed (and now hard to find) studio recording in 1991 on Benson Records titled Say Amen. He also appeared as a panelist in the second version of The Match Game.

Minister

In addition to being an actor and a singer, he is also an ordained Seventh-day Adventist Church minister after his studies from his alma maters, Oakwood University and Andrews University. For the last 25 years he has been an active part of Youthville, USA a children's services organization. He currently serves as National Spokesperson and Advisory Board Chairman. He is the emcee and host of The Most Soulful Sound, an annual gospel choir competition in Raleigh, North Carolina. He also hosts an annual celebrity golf tournament in Elizabeth City, NC at Elizabeth City State University, where he served as Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement. Since the end of 2005 Davis has held the position of Executive Director for Welcome America, a Non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that produces the largest Fourth of July celebration each year in the nation.

Davis is a frequent guest host on Trinity Broadcasting Network. Davis also hosted the Gospel Superfest TV show from 2000 to 2008, which is syndicated by United Television.

Davis is the author of an autobiographical essay entitled "A Mason Dixon Memory" in which he recounts his experiences as an eighth grader dealing with prejudice on a trip to a southern state.[2]
