Clinical Science is a peer-reviewed academic journal publishing papers in the field of clinical investigation, defined as the whole range of biochemical, physiological, immunological and other approaches that may have relevance to disease in man, particularly those which explore integrative biology of systems and pathways and the translation of molecular mechanisms to clinical applications. The journal is published by Portland Press Ltd on behalf of the Biochemical Society from editorial offices in London, UK and La Jolla, USA.

History
2008 marks the centenary year of the journal, which was founded in 1908 by Thomas Lewis (the first editor) and James Mackenzie and first published in 1909 under the title Heart: A Journal for the Study of the Circulation.[1][2] Lewis was the first editor.[3] In 1933, having broadened his interests[1], Lewis renamed the journal Clinical Science (ISSN 0009-9287; 1933–73). It was briefly retitled Clinical Science and Molecular Medicine (ISSN 0301-0538; 1973–8), but finally reverted to the name Clinical Science in 1979.[4][5][6]
From 1945 until 1961 the journal was published by the Medical Research Society (founded by Lewis in 1930)[1], and then jointly by the Medical Research Society and the Biochemical Society until 2003, when the latter became the sole publisher.[7][8]
Modern journal
Clinical Science is published fortnightly online (24 issues per year) and monthly in print (12 issues per year), in two volumes annually. Content from 1998 is available online in PDF and HTML formats, with papers from the previous year being made freely available on 1 January. Clinical Science is also available in Enhanced Electronic Serials Interface-View (EESI-View), an innovative way of viewing journal articles online that has been developed by Portland Press Ltd. EESI-View employs a novel three-frame approach to solve the frustrations of reading journal articles online. It enables the reader to view text, figures and author information at the same time, analogous to the printed page, with easy automatic resizing of frames, simple navigation, linking, roll-overs to authors’ affiliations and references, all customizable to suit the reader.
As of 2008 the journal’s Editor-in-Chief is [R. Clinton Webb] (Medical College of Georgia, USA), who is supported by an international Editorial Board
Its latest impact factor is 3.900, and the journal is ranked 15th of 81 journals in the ISI Medicine (Research & Experimental) category.[9] Clinical Science is indexed by BIOBASE, BIOSIS, CAB International, Chemical Abstracts Service, Current Contents, EMBASE, Medline/Index Medicus and Science Citation Index.
In 2008 Portland Press Ltd launched Opt2Pay, a new pay-to-publish option whereby authors who publish in Clinical Science can now choose to pre-pay to make the final authoritative version of their journal articles freely available immediately on publication, ensuring the journal is compliant with the publishing mandates of The Wellcome Trust, MRC, CRUK, BBSRC etc. The journal is also compliant with the NIH mandate – where authors may deposit their accepted peer-reviewed manuscripts in PubMed Central on acceptance for public release 12 months after publication.
