Clitomachus

(186/7-110/9 bc) Academic sceptic and pupil of Carneades. He allegedly wrote over 400 books, mainly recording the arguments of Carneades, and became head of the Academy in 127/6. Cicero reports him as insisting that Carneades never abandoned the counsel of strict suspension of judgement, the fundamental sceptical aim, although his defection from this standard had been rumoured.
