Biography

Clive Burrows is part of a generation of players who succeeded as saxmen in the shadow -- and for a time in the heart -- of the British beat boom and the British invasion. His early gigs on sax were with such groups as the Wes Minster Five (where he crossed paths with singer/keyboard player Zoot Money) and Zoot Money's Big Roll Band. He also co-founded the Ian Bird Quintet in London. Among his early outfits, most especially the Big Roll Band, he played r&b more than jazz, but eventually he gravitated back toward his first love, founding the New Jazz Orchestra in 1965. He later left the group -- which was taken over by Neil Ardley -- for the Alan Price Set, where he stayed for two years, and then the Gene Washington Band, where he played baritone sax and served as the group's arranger.
