Cnossus

 

Cnossus (Knōsos or Knōssos), the most famous city of Crete in ancient times, situated near the middle of the north coast of the island about 6 km. (4 miles) inland. Its foundation was attributed to the legendary king Minos who also built there the labyrinth to contain the Minotaur.
