Coín is a town and municipality in Málaga province, Spain, about 20 miles west of the provincial capital, Málaga and 20 miles north of Marbella.

With an official population of just over 20,000 inhabitants, Coín is perhaps the most up and coming inland town on the Costa Del Sol. Foreigners now make up a substantial proportion of the towns inhabitants and are attracted to Coín due to the fact it is only 25 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Málaga and Marbella, including the 50 km stretch of coastline in between which includes the popular resorts of Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Benalmadena. Coín however retains its original small Spanish town look and feel.

Coín is also a modern town and has a great infrastructure with the newly built La Trocha shopping centre, at least 4 large supermarkets, a Spanish cinema, bowling alley and plenty of quality bars and restaurants.

Coin has a rich history with both the Moors and the Romans ruling the town in its past, with the Moors defining and controlling the town from 929AD until 1485 when the Christians invaded and took control of Coín. The town is also famous for being the location for the doomed BBC series Eldorado which was filmed in the Los Llanos de Nacimiento region.

Coín is set amongst the scenery of Andalusian mountains, with the Sierra de Las Nieves to the north providing a picturesque snowy background when the Spanish winter creeps in, during which temperatures can near freezing much to the surprise of new foreign inhabitants and visitors.

Economy

The economy was traditionally agriculture, coexisting with marble mining (since Roman times) and ceramics. The latter has been during the twentieth century very important and known, having a color style of its own called "Green Coin". The most significant ceramics workshop during the past century was the Workshop "Cumbreras" and now work is continuing this traditional ceramic material of Coin, with over 300 years old by local artisans.

Cinema City

Cinema City, producing TV series. The city of cinema was a project that was done in the area of "Nacimiento" to produce television series, but have been turned into a tourist area as well. For years, Coin is rolled in several series, the first British Eldorado for the BBC, and after this Andalucian "Plaza Alta" soap operas and "Arrayan", both recorded in "Loasur" studies produced by "Linze TV", and issued by "Canal Sur". At present, tourism, construction, and hospitality have replaced the old industry, there are still many potters and several quarries where furnish marble, dolomite, and sand for construction basically.
